A tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. At Highland Family Dental Care, Dr. Mana Shoeybi performs extractions with great care and precision to ensure your comfort. There are two main types of extractions:

  • Simple Extraction: This is done on teeth that are visible in your mouth. Dr. Shoeybi will loosen the tooth and gently remove it with special tools.
  • Surgical Extraction: This is a more complex procedure for teeth that may be broken under the gum line or haven’t fully erupted. It may involve making a small cut in your gum to access the tooth.

We understand that the thought of having a tooth pulled can make some people nervous. That’s why we take extra steps to make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed during your visit.

Reasons for Needing a Tooth Extraction

There are several situations where removing a tooth might be necessary to protect your oral health:

  • Severe tooth decay that has damaged a large portion of the tooth
  • Advanced gum disease that has caused the tooth to become loose
  • Broken teeth that cannot be repaired with other methods
  • Overcrowded teeth that need to be removed for orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that don’t have room to emerge properly
Infection risk when your immune system is compromised
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out in time for permanent teeth

At Highland Family Dental Care, we always try to save your natural teeth when possible. Dr. Shoeybi will recommend an extraction only when it’s the best option for your oral health.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Before the Procedure

Dr. Shoeybi will take X-rays of the area and review your medical and dental history. Be sure to tell us about any medications you take and if you have conditions like heart disease, liver disease, or artificial joints.

During the Procedure

You’ll receive local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. For simple extractions, Dr. Shoeybi will loosen the tooth with a tool called an elevator, then use forceps to remove it. For surgical extractions, a small cut will be made in your gum, and sometimes a small amount of bone around the tooth may need to be removed. In some cases, the tooth may need to be cut into pieces to make it easier to remove.

Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the procedure is. Our team works hard to make sure you feel at ease throughout the entire process.

After the Procedure

After your tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket. Dr. Shoeybi may place a few stitches to close the gum over the extraction site. You’ll bite on a gauze pad for about 30-45 minutes to help stop the bleeding.

Recovery and Aftercare

For a smooth recovery after your extraction, follow these simple tips. Take pain relievers as prescribed by Dr. Shoeybi and apply an ice pack to your cheek for 10 minutes at a time. Rest for at least 24 hours after the extraction and avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for 24 hours. After 24 hours, rinse with warm salt water to help keep the area clean. Eat soft foods like yogurt, pudding, and applesauce while you heal. Avoid smoking, as it can slow healing, and continue to brush and floss as usual, but avoid the extraction site.

Most people feel back to normal after a few days. If you have any questions during your recovery, our team is always here to help!

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Many people don’t have enough room in their mouths for these teeth, which can lead to problems. Removing wisdom teeth can provide several benefits. The removal prevents overcrowding when there isn’t enough space, as wisdom teeth can push other teeth out of alignment. It also reduces pain from impacted wisdom teeth that can cause jaw discomfort, headaches, and difficulty opening your mouth. Extraction prevents damage to nearby teeth since wisdom teeth can grow at odd angles, potentially harming adjacent teeth. It decreases infection risk as partially erupted wisdom teeth create pockets where bacteria can grow. In rare cases, removal can prevent cysts and tumors that might develop around wisdom teeth and damage your jawbone.

Dr. Shoeybi can evaluate your wisdom teeth during a regular check-up and recommend removal if necessary. Many patients choose to have wisdom teeth removed before they cause problems.
