If you’re a parent, you know the feeling. Your child’s first haircut. First day of preschool. First lost tooth. Each milestone comes with a mix of excitement and a little bit of worry. Their first dental visit is no different.
At Highland Family Dental Care, we see that worry on parents’ faces all the time. Will my child cry or be scared? Will they let the dentist even look in their mouth? We’ve designed our practice to make that first visit feel more like a fun outing than a medical appointment. And we want you to know exactly what to expect, so you can feel just as relaxed as your child.

When Should You Schedule That First Visit?
The American Dental Association recommends bringing your child in by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. We know that sounds early. But here’s why it matters: those first baby teeth set the stage for healthy adult teeth. Starting early helps us spot any developing issues and, more importantly, helps your child grow up feeling comfortable at the dentist.
At Highland Family Dental Care, we welcome little ones as young as one year old. Dr. Mana Shoeybi and our team are patient, gentle, and experienced with even the most cautious toddlers.
The Happy Visit Approach
We call it a “happy visit” because that’s exactly what we aim for. For your child’s first appointment, we focus on making friends with the dental chair, not on doing any real treatment. There’s no drill. No needles. No pressure.
Instead, we invite your child to sit in the chair, maybe even in your lap if that feels safer. We let them explore the mirror, feel the water spray on their fingers, and watch the light move around. Everything is done at their pace.
The Knee-to-Knee Exam
For very young children, Dr. Shoeybi often uses a technique called the knee-to-knee exam. You sit face-to-face with the doctor, and your child lies back with their head in Dr. Shoeybi’s lap. This way, your child can see you the whole time, and the exam feels safe and quick.
The doctor will gently count your child’s teeth, check for any early signs of decay, and look at their gums and bite. All of this takes just a few minutes.
A Quick Cleaning (If They’re Ready)
If your child is comfortable, we might do a quick polish with a little spinning brush and some bubblegum-flavored paste. It’s fast, fun, and leaves their teeth feeling squeaky clean.
But if your child isn’t ready for that yet? No problem. We never push. The goal is a positive experience, not a perfect cleaning.
Tips for Parents: How to Prepare
You play a big role in setting the tone. Here are a few simple ways to prepare your child for their first visit:
- Use positive words. Talk about the dentist as a friendly helper who keeps smiles healthy. Avoid words like “shot,” “drill,” or “pain.”
- Read a book together. There are lots of children’s books about visiting the dentist. Reading one beforehand can make the experience feel familiar.
- Keep it simple. For young children, too much information can be overwhelming. A simple “We’re going to meet a nice dentist who will count your teeth today” is plenty.
- Stay calm yourself. Children pick up on parental anxiety. If you’re relaxed, they’re much more likely to be relaxed too.
Why Starting Early Matters
A positive first visit does more than check a box. It builds trust. A child who learns early that the dentist is a safe place is more likely to grow into an adult who keeps up with regular checkups. That’s a gift that lasts a lifetime.
